ACCRA, GHANA – October 26, 2023 – Professor Osakwe, Chairman of the Nigerian in Diaspora Organization (NIDO) Africa, has commended the Nigerian in Diaspora Organization Ghana (NIDO Ghana) and the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) for their sustained commitment to combating human trafficking across West Africa.
During his official visit to Ghana, Professor Osakwe emphasized the diaspora’s crucial role in protecting vulnerable Nigerians abroad, describing these communities as the “first line of defence” against transnational organized crime. “The diaspora community plays a critical role as the first line of defence and support for vulnerable Nigerians abroad,” Professor Osakwe stated. “NIDO Ghana has demonstrated exemplary resilience and commitment, acting as a crucial watchdog and partner in identifying and mitigating the risks associated with human trafficking.”
Shocknaija Media (News Online) learnt this from Professor Osakwe as he particularly praised NiDCOM and its Chairman/CEO, Dr. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, for prioritizing anti-trafficking initiatives within the Commission’s mandate. “Under Dr. Dabiri-Erewa’s guidance, NiDCOM has strengthened essential partnerships necessary for coordinating rescue operations and reintegration efforts for trafficking victims,” he noted, commending her tireless advocacy in linking diaspora engagement with humanitarian protection.
To underscore the tangible impact of these efforts, Professor Osakwe attended a court session where a human trafficker received a 10-year prison sentence, demonstrating the serious consequences of these crimes in the region.
Professor Osakwe took the opportunity to personally commend the Chargé d’Affaires for his exceptional service and evident humanitarian leadership. These exemplary qualities, he underscored, have been widely recognized and praised by the Nigerian community residing in Ghana, illustrating the positive influence and deep appreciation among the diaspora for the embassy’s dedicated and impactful work.
Additionally, Professor Osakwe paid a courtesy call on the Chairman and Executives of the All Nigeria Community (ANC) Ghana, met with the Executives and Board of Trustee members of NIDO Ghana, and dedicated time to visit the family of the Late President of NIDO Ghana, Prince Olayemi Akinwande, to offer condolences and support.
Professor Osakwe’s commendation underscores the vital importance of multi-sectoral collaboration between government agencies, diaspora organizations, and civil society in effectively combating illegal migration and human trafficking in West Africa.
